The U.N. Correspondents Association held a press briefing with former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Mike Gravel, on Monday, September 14th in the UNCA Meeting Room (S-310).
Senator Gravel discussed U.S. foreign policy ahead of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Senator Gravel provided his bio below:
Mike Gravel represented Alaska for two terms in the United States Senate from 1969 to 1980. He is best known for having read the classified Pentagon Papers into the Congressional record after they were given to him by whistleblower Dan Ellsberg. The Papers showed the U.S. knew it was losing the war in Vietnam but hid this from the American public. Sen. Gravel was also a tireless critic of U.S. defense spending, nuclear weapons and nuclear power. He was the first elected U.S. official to visit Hiroshima after the atomic bomb. In 2008 he launched a quixotic campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination and locked horns with both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton during several primary debates.
